The pomegranate (Punica granatum, L.) is a plant belonging to the Punicaceae family (or Lythraceae according to the APG classification) and to the Punica genus, originating in a geographical region that goes from Iran to the Himalayan area of ​​northern India, and is present since ancient times in the Caucasus and in the entire Mediterranean maquis.

The fruit is called pomegranate and has been cultivated for many millennia.

The plant has a strong tendency to produce root suckers and to form a dense bush, it is a small tree or shrub with a bushy habit and is deciduous and broad-leaved. It can reach 5-6 meters in height and even live over 100 years.
