Cherries

Cherries are the fruit of the cherry tree (Prunus avium).

The domesticated plant was obtained by repeated hybridizations of the botanical species.

The name cerasa present in several Italian dialects, as well as the Portuguese one (cereja), French (cerise), Spanish (cereza), Romanian (cireş), in Sardinian (cerexa), and English (cherry), derives from the Greek κέρασος (kérasos ) and hence from the name of the city of Cerasunte (or rather Giresun), in Pontus (present day Turkey) from which, according to Pliny the Elder, they were imported to Rome in 72 BC from Lucio Licinio Lucullo the first cherry trees.
